The Attention Ladder

How brands actually earn attention - and why most skip the bottom rungs.

Most brand briefs start at the top of the ladder: awareness, then consideration, then preference. That's the wrong way up. Attention isn't a tier - it's a sequence. Skip a rung and the next one doesn't hold weight.

The five rungs

Notice. Recognise. Remember. Repeat. Recommend. Each rung has a different unit of work, a different signal, and a different definition of done. Confusing them is why most brand work feels busy but underperforms.

Where most brands are stuck

Stuck on rung one. Buying impressions, calling it attention, and wondering why the brand never compounds. The fix isn't more media - it's earning the next rung before paying for the one above it.

You don't buy attention. You earn the right to be remembered, one rung at a time.

New frameworks, first.

No newsletter cadence, no drip sequence, no sales team. I email when I’ve written something worth reading, which is not often.

Unsubscribe in one click, obviously.

This is the thinking. The work is the other half.

If the framework rings true for your brand, the fastest way to find out is a conversation.
